Abscesses are mostly developed from a bite infection rather than a scratch infection because the bite wounds are a lot deeper than a scratch.

If you are not sure if your cat has an abscess here are some signs that indicate that your cat has an abscess. Signs of infection can show before the swelling develops; such as going off their food, nose becomes a lot dryer than normal, when handled may hiss and scratch at you because doesn’t want to be touched due to the infection showing some pain, depending on where the infection is will be more noticeable such as if bitten on the leg then your cat will be limping. All these are signs that your cat has gotten into a fight and could potentially develop into an abscess and should be taken to the vet as soon as possible.

Once you have identified a wound or abscess you are probably wondering how you would treat it. First of all it should be bathed with salt water and keep a close eye on the wound for the upcoming days to see if you notice a progression in the wound such as swelling. Very often the first indication that your cat has an abscess is that it bursts releasing a foul smell with white/green pus, however if the abscess doesn’t burst then your vet will take the correct procedure to lance it out and flush all the remaining pus away with an anti-septic solution. The vet will then supply your cat with some anti-biotic to fight the infection, your vet will use their experience to decide what type of anti-biotic to use due to different types of anti-biotic that kill different types of bacteria.
